Smart Vislift in Vinkeveen: Technology Supports Natural Fish Migration

In Vinkeveen, an innovative Vislift has recently been installed, enabling fish to independently pass obstacles such as locks. This development marks an important step in promoting natural fish migration and restoring ecological connections.
Technology for Ecology
The Vislift in Vinkeveen is equipped with advanced technologies that support the natural migration of fish. A built-in camera with artificial intelligence (AI) automatically recognises the fish species using the lift. This data is processed in real time and displayed in the Vislift Control Centre, providing ecologists and water managers with insights into fish populations and migration patterns.
Variable Flow and Attraction Current
The Vislift utilises a variable flow, adapted to the needs of different fish species. An attraction current draws fish to the entrance of the lift, after which they can overcome height differences via a spiral staircase structure. This design ensures a gradual and safe passage, even for weaker swimmers.
Ecological Impact
For species such as eels, which travel long distances to spawn, the Vislift provides an essential passage. Ecologist Daan Maassen from the Amstel, Gooi and Vecht Water Board emphasises the importance of such facilities for the preservation of fish populations. The Vislift allows young eels to find their way back to the Vinkeveense Lakes to grow.
Sustainable Water Management
In addition to facilitating fish migration, the Vislift contributes to sustainable water management. The system continuously measures water quality parameters such as water levels and flow rates. In case of deviations, the system automatically generates alerts, allowing for timely intervention.
With the implementation of the Vislift in Vinkeveen, an important contribution is being made to the restoration of ecological connections and the promotion of biodiversity in Dutch waters.
